When Your Body Remembers What Your Mind Has Moved Past

One year after the lightning strike, I’m learning how to meet what my body remembers...even when my mind has already moved on.

Today is August 3, 2025.
It has been one year since our house was struck by lightning at 3 o’clock in the morning.

Last night, as I crawled into bed, it surprised me.
There was no rain. No thunder. No flashing sky.
But my body remembered anyway.

A flicker of alertness.
A subtle tightness in my chest.
My Oura ring even picked up an elevated resting heart rate.
Like my nervous system was saying, “Just in case.”

Even without a storm, something in me braced.
Not from fear - but from memory.

And honestly? It made sense.
Because the body doesn’t run on logic.
It remembers what it lived through.

Somatics Taught Me How to Listen

When our house was struck a year ago, I moved into action.
I was grounded, clear-headed, present.
And I still believe the work I’d done…especially through the Enneagram and nervous system healing…helped make that possible.

(If you haven’t read the story of the fire itself, you can read that here... it gives more context to the experience and what it revealed about my patterns.)

Being grounded, clear-headed, and present doesn’t mean trauma didn’t happen.
It just means I had capacity in the moment.

Because the truth is:
Even when things look fine on the outside…
The body still remembers.

For a long time, I didn’t know how to listen to that.
I didn’t know how to interpret what my body was trying to tell me.

But somatic work changed that.
It taught me that the tightness in my chest wasn’t something to fix or ignore.
It was a signal.
A messenger.
A moment of wisdom from within.

So last night, instead of pushing it away…
I placed my hand on my chest.
I breathed deeper.
I reminded my body:
We’re safe now.
You don’t have to be on alert.

And it softened.

The Body Heals in Layers, Not Timelines

This year, there was no panic.
Just a moment of awareness…and the tools to meet it.

And to me, that’s what healing looks like.
Not a perfect calm.
Not the absence of sensation.
But the ability to stay with yourself…even when your body remembers something your mind has moved past.

That’s the shift.
That’s the gift.

So today, I noticed how much more capacity I carry.
I noticed the difference in my response.
I noticed the space I’ve created.

And I’m grateful for that.

If your body is holding a story you haven’t fully understood yet…
There’s nothing wrong with you.
Your body might just be speaking in a language you were never taught.
A language of sensation, signals, and subtle truths.

Learning to listen takes time.
But you don’t have to rush.
You can begin gently…right where you are.
